McCracken’s 83rd Pennsylvania participated in some of the most famous fighting at Gettysburg. The Third Brigade arrived on the battlefield early on the morning of July 2. Initially assigned to support Union artillery at the center of the line, by 4 pm, they moved to Little Round Top, where they took up a position to the right of the 20th Maine. Led by Strong Vincent, who was killed in the attack, the 83rd repelled the Confederate assault, suffering 46 casualties. Skirmishers sent out after the Confederates captured 74 prisoners. On July 3, the unit was held in reserve of the Union center, and did not see action.

The Monument to the 83rd is on Sykes Avenue, on the south side of Little Round Top.
